DECEMBER 23, 2020 UPDATE

We understand that outdoor or home exercise can be difficult for many who may be immunocompromised, in particular during winter months in Iowa. Our hope is that we can provide a healthy outlet for those individuals to continue to maintain their health and fitness this winter while creating an environment where they can feel safe to do so.

In an effort to accommodate those in our membership family who may be immunocompromised or those who have requested the full use of masks within the facility, Performance Health & Fitness will implement mask required hours during the month of January.

These hours will be reserved from 1:30pm-3:30pm each day, Monday through Friday for the duration of the month of January. We will monitor these hours and will review them for any continuation or changes that may take place beyond January 31st.

Outside of the hours of 1:30pm-3:30pm Monday through Friday, we will continue to follow the guidance found in the governor’s proclamation which requires of the use of masks/face coverings at indoor businesses with the exception to remove them while actively exercising. We just ask that you please utilize a mask or face covering while entering/exiting the facility and while in any common areas where social distancing may be difficult such as locker room, stairwell, and lobby areas.

As always, we ask that all of our members, guests, and staff to stay home if they are symptomatic or believe they may have been exposed to the virus until they have been cleared by their primary care provider.

This year has been anything but normal. It has been hard on everyone. In these uncertain times, we have really focused on supporting other local businesses. One way we have liked to support local restaurants is ordering take-out. We are lucky to have so many great restaurants in our area. One restaurant that has delicious and nutritious options is Maggie’s Farm Wood-Fire Pizza.

We all know that it is important to eat a balanced diet for overall health. Traditional Italian foods are part of the Mediterranean style of eating, which focuses on fresh vegetables and fruits, grains, beans, nuts and seeds, olive oil, and moderate amounts of lean poultry and fish.

At Maggie’s Farm, they use fresh ingredients and traditional Italian dishes to make you feel like you are in Italy. Another highlight is they can cater to your specific dietary preferences or needs of their customers. They offer vegan and vegetarian options to those interested. They have a variety of delicious dishes that nutrient-dense ingredients.

Some ingredients you will see on their menu are:

Tomatoes – These fruits are essential in Italian foods. They serve as the base of Maggie’s Farm pizza and marinara sauces and are an excellent source of vitamin C, and high in vitamin A, potassium, and folate.

Olive Oil – Olive oil is high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, which help to lower your LDL cholesterol. Maggie’s Farm uses olive oil in many of their dishes like in their pesto sauce.

Garlic – Garlic is a staple of Italian cuisine. It can provide heart health benefits like lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. Maggie’s Farm uses garlic as a flavor enhancer in their pizzas and pasta dishes.

Ricotta – Maggie’s Farm uses ricotta in its delicious cannelloni dish. Ricotta is a good source of protein and also calcium.

Grains – Unrefined grains are abundant in Italian cuisine. They are a good source of fiber, magnesium, and vitamin E. Fiber helps promote healthy digestion, which can help stabilize blood sugar and help to reduce LDL cholesterol. Find grains in Maggie’s Farm pizza crust or their house-made pasta and bread.

“I am a competitive cyclist and have been in personal training at Performance for 6 years. The best part about the trainers is that they know our medical histories very well.  Leslie is great at modifying a training session specifically to each individual person’s limitations so as to avoid injury.”*
