Here at Performance, we have many services to help you achieve your personal goals. You can work with a personal trainer, take group fitness classes or do your own routine. Time goes by and you have seen some changes but not as much as you were expecting.  What could be missing? This could become very frustrating and the reason could be that you aren’t putting forth the exact amount of effort required to meet your goals. How can you guarantee that you are working at the appropriate intensity level?

I have been experiencing this exact issue with some of my current clients and new members.  After sitting down and figuring out what is going on, I often discover that people aren’t working out at the right intensity level for what they want to achieve.  It can be frustrating for me and for my clients that we are working out so hard together but then when they get out on their own they don’t know how much they should be pushing themselves. You only achieve results when you are working at different intensity levels to burn a certain type of energy.

Your Body’s Energy Systems

Your body is a machine with three different energy systems in place to keep it functioning daily. If you become deficient in a certain energy system, then your body can’t utilize the energy acquired from food and thus stores excess fat. It is important to comprise workouts so that you become efficient in utilizing carbohydrates, fats and proteins with ease. To do this, you need to combine different types of training that incorporates steady-state exercise with high intensity interval training (HIIT) and strength training. The best method for making sure that you are working out at the appropriate intensity level is to use a heart rate monitor.

Monitoring Your Heart Rate

We have a system in place at Performance that is user friendly, affordable and more accurate than other products on the market. MYZONE is designed to motivate you to put forth the effort required to obtain your health and fitness goals. The system uses five color-coded heart rate zones to establish the effort that you are exerting based on your maximum heart rate. The colors are determined based on a percentage of your maximum heart rate so that you can be sure that your exercise is pushing you to a safe level and not overdoing it. While you exercise, you wear a chest strap and a Live Tile will pop up onto our monitors or your phone to be able to see your intensity level. When you are not in the gym, you can sync the system to your smartphone by downloading the free app and connecting through your Bluetooth system. As a trainer, it also allows me to monitor my clients workouts. This allows me to hold them accountable for their physical activity so that they don’t have a reason to skip workouts.

MYZONE vs. Fitbit

You might be thinking, “Why would I get a MYZONE when I can just go and buy a Fitbit?” The accuracy of your heart rate while wearing a chest strap versus a wrist heart rate monitor will be 99.4% accurate compared to the 85% of a wrist watch. If you want results, the chest strap is the better choice since it is activated by the electrical conduction of your heart. While you use your MYZONE, you also have the opportunity to collect MEPs (MYZONE effort points) to hold you accountable.  The more MEPs you have earned means that you are pushing yourself in the right intensity levels. MYZONE also will conduct challenges throughout the year with various prizes, including cash, to keep you motivated.
