Specialty Yoga & Barre

Stay strong, toned and flexible this fall with 8-Week Specialty Yoga and Barre classes!

The Barre workout is a series of movements that strengthen the entire body, ensuring no muscle is overlooked. Combining functional strength, dance, pilates, and yoga, we use bodyweight as a resistance to focus on alignment and optimal posture while enhancing body awareness, coordination, balance, and overall strength. Movements are choreographed to high-energy music which results in a fun, intense, and safe workout. Movements can be customized for all fitness levels – no experience necessary! Various props will be used including the barre, light weights, resistance bands, and yoga props.

Power Yoga – Sundays with Julie Rice 10:00-11:00am (Sept 24-Nov 12)
Power yoga is a faster paced, vinyasa style yoga class. The class begins with sun salutations and challenging flows to build heat and strengthen the body. As the class progresses the building blocks for inversions, arm balances, and deeper backbends will be introduced. All levels are welcome and no experience is needed as new poses will be broken down and offered in stages appropriate to everyone’s ability.

Gentle Flow Yoga – Mondays 9:00-10:00am (Sept 25-Nov 13) and Tuesdays 6:45-7:45pm (Sept 26-Nov 14) with Katie Buswell
Gentle flow is a softer approach to Power yoga. While the poses still flow together, the nature of it is much slower in pace and gentle in practice. It is the in between of keeping active while still maintaining that peaceful and enjoyable approach. There is less strain for mind and body. Whether you have limited capabilities, limited strength or flexibility, it can be adapted to suit everyone’s needs.

Yoga for Flexibility – Wednesdays with Shelly Horswill 6:00-6:45am (Sept 27th-Nov 15th)
This class is open to everyone, and is geared towards increasing range of motion and flexibility. A great addition to your workout routine no matter what your age or flexibility. Modifications, variations, and props will be introduced.

Power Sculpt Yoga – Fridays with Joe Baumann 10:30-11:30am (Sept 29th-Nov 17th)
Jump start your day with Power Sculpt Yoga! This vinyasa yoga class will have an emphasis on building strength and toning your core, while still honoring your need to stretch and relax. Walk out the door energized, peaceful, and ready for the day ahead.

Stretch & Relax – Fridays with Joe Baumann 5:30-6:30pm (Sept 29th-Nov 17th)
A class synchronizing breath with postures. Focused on stretching, geared to a relaxing experience. Options will be given for those wanting more of a challenge.

About Julie: Julie has been practicing yoga since 2007 when she took her first class in San Francisco. As a dancer, she loved the flowing movement in Vinyasa and power classes. In 2009, she began teaching in Des Moines to share her passion for yoga with others. Julie completed the YogaWorks 200 Hour teacher training in 2011 while living in Hawaii and has completed continuing education in many yoga formats including yin and prenatal yoga. She focuses on proper alignment and detailed cuing in her classes to enable students to reach their goals, whether that be touching their toes or getting their first arm balance!


joe-b-circleAbout Joe: I decided to try yoga after reading a few articles about the physical and emotional benefits. I fell in love with yoga part way through the first class I took. A feeling of bliss overcame me, and I realized I was right where I was meant to be. I would often stay after class to practice poses, talking with my teachers and other students about any tips they had to improve my yoga practice. Over time, I was being asked by others for advice. I wanted to share the joy I found in yoga with others and enrolled in the teacher training program at Downward Dog. I have taught at local gyms and studios, and privately as well. I have passed the halfway point of my 200 RYT course, and will be certified by the Yoga Alliance in February of 2017. I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to share the passion I’ve found in yoga with you all!



katie-b-circleAbout Katie: Katie took her first yoga class in 2004 and fell in love with it. Since then, she has focused on her own practice and also brought yoga to lots of people who found it to be a great workout. She was so impressed with the benefits of yoga that she decided to get her 200 hour certification and share it with as many people possible. Students who take her class find that it helps with their endurance and flexibility, both on and off the mat. Staying flexible in your body, as well as your mind, is one benefit from yoga that she is grateful for and hopes to share with others.


shelly-headshotAbout Shelly:  I have been practicing yoga for over 10 years now, but it wasn’t until I took my first class in a studio that I fell in love with yoga. There was something about that serene space and the collective energy in the room that hooked me. As my passion for yoga grew I sought out training and have been teaching since 2006. In an effort to deepen my training, I completed my 200 hour RYT in 2011 through Serenity Yoga here in Iowa City. I enjoy helping people find that sacred, peaceful, joyful place within no matter what their outer circumstances may be like. I think yoga should be accessible to everyone and enjoy teaching a wide variety of classes from more gentle, meditative classes to power yoga classes and everything in between; always offering modifications so that everyone in the class can feel successful. Yoga is more than just the physical postures you do on your mat. My teaching hopes to inspire body, mind, and spirit so that you carry a sense of balance, peace, and joy from your mat into your daily lives!
